Crisis of Spirit: One Chinese point of view on iG’s recent losses

DOTALAND note: Pretty interesting, yet perhaps a bit overreactive. Well-written, this is one point of view. Is this the fall of iG or just a major bump in their path? We can all speculate, and this piece does so unabashedly, with some assumptions, rumors, and analysis all in one.

We all know that there would never be one singular force to always dominate the Chinese Dota scene, but what looks like a sudden and drastic decline in iG’s fortunes has taken us all by surprise. From “Best in Universe” to GGing within 20 minutes, what exactly has happened?

In-game analysis

These are all things that we’ve seen with our own eyes: iG’s players first lost their motivation to continue innovating and improving, their picks seemingly stuck in a pre-Chinese New Year rut of old styles and tactics. At most they take an idea or two from other teams’ strategies, something that might allow them to maintain some semblance of respectability in online matches, but nothing more.

This by itself isn’t necessarily irredeemably bad for them, what is, however, is what appears to be a loss of fighting spirit and temperance in their play, replaced by what looks like pridefulness.

Let’s talk about ChuaN first. He was the worst out of them all earlier against LGD.cn. Perhaps he was not wrong to rotate over to help Furion, but he didn’t wait to cast his stun, thinking he could show off what he must think is a 100% accuracy spell for him, yet sadly this time, luck shows that it does not always stand on the same side, and he missed. He could’ve waited for Furion to trap the enemy in place first and then get the sure stun as any pro team would do; clearly this was not a lack of communication, but an exhibit of players making pub-level mistakes.

Then there’s Farmer Zhou. Confidently skilling at level 1 before leaving fountain, perhaps because he’s a pro, there’s nothing wrong with using Treants to scout. But since you’ve done that already, what was the point in running your hero to the river? To contest a rune with Dark Seer? The lanes at this point are obvious, you will be up against Dark Seer, do you really think you can win the rune over a DS at level 1? And then DS gets a haste rune, you’re 99% dead, but still why don’t you summon some more trees and try some blocking, and perhaps change that 99% to a 90%? Instead you do nothing, jog casually back towards your lane and feed first blood before making it, you’ve gotta be kidding me!

Faith, brah, your IQ has been eaten by your woman too? What was that ban/pick? They’ve banned five physical damage cores, then picked a Spectre, leaving you guys with no physical damage to choose from, hmm? Fallen into their trap, haven’t you? But still, you could make some better picks even after that, yet you pick Tinker and Furion as your last two, two pushers to go up against a lineup with Nyx and Spectre? Were you afraid that they wouldn’t have enough fun ganking already? Your entire lineup had one hard stun in Lina, and uncertain stun at that. Apart from that, you have Shadow Demon’s Disrupt. They’ve got the likes of Dark Seer, meaning that once they go rush you, you can counter kill at most one hero. So this entire draft left iG on the back foot from the start.

YYF this game missed last hits, so many easy last hits. Perhaps it’s because you were coordinating with teammates, or perhaps it’s because you’re supremely confident and do not need measly last hits, or perhaps you were reminiscing about that last threesome you’d had in your dreams… whatever, thousands of reasons, but missing those last hits in such a game showed to everyone that iG is missing that concentrated determination that they had in the past.

Watching Sylar patiently going back and forth adjusting even the slightest of problems with his equipment, watching him complete all his last hits under the tower, this LGD squad right now has an impressively superior mentality and attitude compared to this iG squad, that is for sure.

Ferrari_430 is the only one that performed normally, but everything had gone too far beyond his control, and he couldn’t save them.

Out of game analysis

There is no invincible person or dynasty, because the world is always changing, and no one can forever keep up with what happens at the top. However, people always desire more, and their desire is an impatient one. For iG’s players, they are at the peaks of their respective careers, what comes after the peak? Decline, then retirement.

No matter how strong they are now, time will always take its toll, and they are all clear about this. So in a recent livestream, we heard Zhou asking SJQ how to go about setting up a Taobao shop. We’ve seen the typically reserved YYF go from an occasional streamer within the team’s streaming rotation, to the constant streamer now. And big, simple ChuaN, streaming, but away from the bright glares of the domestic scene — he has selected to stream on a foreign platform.

Streaming. The advantages are as a great tool for promotion and name-recognition, and in this day and age, these are valuable things for those looking to carve out a new path after retirement as players.

And finally, Zhou began streaming.

There was that incident between YYF and Zhou; looking back, that was to be expected. YYF streaming solo, his popularity soaring, and more or less affecting the interests of the rest of the team. These things perhaps are all just surface level, but it is maybe just that allocation or split in interests that is affecting iG’s performances, that has shaken their roots as a team.

When Zhou spoke of the “spirit of Dota” in his recent interview, little did we know that they were already mired in a crisis of their own spirit.

A friend of VG.fy’s lets us all know a bit more about the player…

Originally a post on Dota 2 Tieba, a friend of VG.fy’s tells us a bit more about this promising player, playing for the up and coming team VG.

Let’s start from when fy first started playing Dota.

VG.fy’s Haofang (Dotaland note: Haofang is a matchmaking platform like 11 or Garena) ID was Baixiao|dcfdcc, with a bunch of color codes on the end.

Before Haofang changed their points system on accounts, he was number one on the platform, and it was an uncontestable number one. That was before Faith had become as well-known on Haofang as fy was at the time.

I personally occasionally came across fy in top lobbies on Haofang. At that time in the top lobbies, strong players for some reason all had ‘sunset’ in their IDs, at one point I joined a room with him in it, assuming that his high points on his ID had been spammed illegitimately as so many others had done. I joined and the game started, I was on the other side.

He picked Shadow Fiend, his teammates were Sven, Crystal Maiden, Windrunner, and was it Naix or Bounty Hunter? My team, I really can’t recall clearly anymore, but regardless, in this game fy’s teammates lost two lanes hard, but his Shadow Fiend mid crushed our mid, and he singlehandedly kept his side in the game. His Shadow Fiend was all kinds of skillful, as he nimbly kept lanes pushed out and gave his teammates time to get some farm. In that time period, he achieved a quad-kill while abusing vision in the trees. After the game ended, after my team’s huge advantage had been overturned at the hands of one Shadow Fiend, I was in awe at the skill of this player with the ID of Baixiao, later to be known as fy.

After the 11 platform went open, he no longer wished to stay on Haofang, saying that it lacked room for improvement, so he moved over to 11 with some friends and made it to the top 50. Sometimes facing the likes of YYF and ChuaN, he would joke that he was about to get stomped; he was always a bit introverted — a very quiet person, he never flamed anyone while playing Dota.

He doesn’t get big-headed after beating a few nobodies, he never talks trash. He tends to be down to earth, preferring to stay home in a corner and play Dota with his girlfriend over anything else.

Fy truly is a great Dotaer. He’s humble, and he really has huge talent. Upon finishing school in 2012, with no idea what to do, perhaps he wanted to try something else. I had feared that he would thus stop playing Dota, or something like that. But on QQ one day he told me, he was with a team called AgFox, he wanted to give it a try, challenge himself, all for his dreams.

He’s a good person, always joking, quite a funny player really.

Dota 2 Super League Preview

A quick preview of the groups and teams in the upcoming Dota 2 Super League…

The Dota 2 Super League (DSL) begins on May 10 in Shanghai, with 10 powerhouse teams congregating for a showdown via group stages, playoffs, elimination, and finals, for the chance at over 1 million RMB in prize money.

Group A sees a relatively larger gap in ability. Apart from it being expected that iG will top the group, all the other spots are up for grabs amongst the other teams.

1. iG: TI2 champions, widely recognized as the best team in the world currently, they’ve successfully dominated just about every major event in 2012 and 2013. Every position in the team is played at a world-class level. For iG, the only question is whether anyone else has the power in them to take them down, and challenge them for first in the group.

2. LGD.cn: Third place at TI2, managed to defeat iG in G-1. However, they’ve undergone a series of changes lately, with LongDD leaving not long after joining, which highlights an element of instability within LGD.cn. Can LGD.cn show us a new face along with their recent changes?

3. Vici Gaming: A new team not long formed, yet the presence in their team of one of the three big carries of yesteryear, ZSMJ, brings a major talking point for viewers and competitors alike. Can VG achieve a top 3 finish in this group with such time-honored talent? And as a former LGD player, ZSMJ, who had once brought so much glory to his old team, will be looking to prove himself against them now. By his side, newcomer Cty is another point of interest to look forward to.

4. TongFu: A team that seems to match the level of their opponents, strong when facing strong, weak when facing weak, they possess Hao and Mu, two top tier Chinese players, yet have been in terrible form recently. After switching out two players, can they re-discover their touch?

5. ForLove: One of the best of the second tier Chinese teams, ForLove has some history behind them, yet have always stuttered a bit when it came to results. They have fairly plentiful experience, yet haven’t found their own rhythm in making a breakthrough somewhere. Similar to TongFu, they’re appearing here after making rostre changes, and whether the changes will make the difference for them remains to be seen.

Group B sees a much closer spread in terms of team ability. Just who advances and who falls might come unpredictably. New teams in here may have new styles of play, DK itches to redeem themselves, and interest will be high in seeing whether LGD.int and Orange can break through in the Chinese scene.

1. DK: Predicting DK as first place here, isn’t necessarily because they are clear favorites in terms of ability in the group, but more because their past performances demand this kind of high expectation for them. They have the world’s greatest carry player, the Anti-Mage himself, BurNIng. They have trash talk king xB/rOtk, and they have Super, 357, and MMY, players who have won countless championships before. DK’s results in the past year have been poor, yet anyone who overlooks them does so at their own peril, because their experience and determination here will not be lacking — as long as they execute well, winning everything is not a dream

2. LGD.int: Runners up in the G-League 2012 Season 2, a team formed of players from five different countries. They train together with LGD.cn in Hangzhou, combining the light grace of European Dota with the steadiness of Chinese Dota, and this gives them more than enough to compete in group b. They’re the ‘foreigners’ Chinese team’.

3. Orange: The only true foreign team present here, representing the top of SEA Dota. Their star player and the heart of the team, Mushi, has been known for a long time with his stylish play and flashy antics. In the recent G-1 qualifiers, he led Orange to next offline stage, proving that they can stand amongst the best that China has to offer. As the sole truly non-Chinese team, can they make it all the way?

4. RisingStars: Another new team, formed recently by former members of DT.Club and Noah’s Ark. They’ve got undeniable personal and team skill, but are lacking in match experience and adaptability. Their style tends to be over-aggressive, so a matchup with them in it is guaranteed to be exciting to watch. They also often bring out innovative tactics, and are a very imaginative team.

5. RattleSnake: A new team of old players, all of their members have rich experience. Their captain, Luo, is recognized as a master of strategy, and often brings unexpected picks and tactics. This team has been recognized as having great dark horse potential in the group.

One fan brings Dota to Tibet…

Recently, one dedicated fan of Dota made the pilgrimmage to a center of Buddhist spiritualism, Tibet, and brought Dota 2 along with him to find blessings for the upcoming launch of Dota 2 servers in China.

He is a 20-something player of Dota. On April 12, he had posted various images from his journey, in an effort to do his part in promoting Dota 2.

From his writings on the topic, he is a believer in Buddhism, and has been playing Dota for a very long time, at various points in the past having been part of the volunteer testers for DotA and Dota 2. He’s put his life’s passion and energy into Dota, and so he has an uncomparable thirst to see Dota 2 succeed in China.

From Chengdu, to Erlang Mountain, Kangding… back and forth through the mountains he went, bringing Dota along with him.

In his travels, he found joy, and he met challenges. And at a guest house, he even came across other Dota fans. With his Dota posters in hand, he collected signatures and blessings for Dota all along the way from fellow fans and new converts alike.

ChuaN: I stepped onto this path by playing and fighting for my dreams! Esports has become my professional career, so it isn’t simply play! Every day we undergo specific, targeted, and planned training!

Q: You went from being a solo mid player to successfully transforming into a 4 position support, very different roles both mentally and attitude-wise. Q: Can I get a blessing from you in my quest for the goddess in my life?

Q: What do esports players do after they retire?
Efeng: The cream of the crop can continue on as leaders, coaches, or managers after they retire. Others can transition into club support staff, media people, or work at gaming companies, or become a commentator. Lots of possibilities 🙂

Q: Efeng, what are your views on those players who are still very young, and also need to continue their studies?
Efeng: I feel that these things aren’t necessarily in conflict with one another. Games can be their hobby from youth, it’s the same basic principle as those kids that take up things like art, sports, etc. And if they display true talent in some way, then they can consider a career in it. 🙂

Q: Hello sir, can you say whether you’re satisfied with the atmosphere of our esports scene? Compared to foreign esports, what are some weaknesses of Chinese esports?
Efeng: Still lacking in mainstream recognition and understanding.

Q: When will the iG website get an overhaul? It’s lacking compared to many foreign clubs’ sites. Looking forward to official iG forums, so we iG fans have somewhere to go. What do you think?
Efeng: It’s all in the works! There’ll be an all-new look soon!

Q: I would like to ask, what is average pay and compensation like in the industry, what are the benefits?
Efeng: Staff are comparable to typical gaming companies. For players, it depends on the club and the players’ ability. The better the results, the more popular the player, the more they get paid… similar to professional sports.

Q: As a university student, how can I best contribute to esports?
Efeng: Study hard, graduate, then join the esports industry!

Q: Any considerations for creating sub-teams, for example regional or provincial feeder teams?
Efeng: Yes, in the future we will have all sorts of developmental squads.

Q: As management of the club, what are the most important things for the club’s success? Where does most of your funding come from? Thank you.
Efeng: I think that the most important things are stability and the ability to execute well. Funding mostly comes from sponsors, sales, events, and promotional activities.

Q: Have you thought about creating an international squad?
Efeng: If Chinese players are the best in something, then what’s the point in creating an international team?

Q: What are your thoughts on flexibility of roles and the ability to transition between roles in esports?
Efeng: I feel that the limits are much fewer, and it is much easier to transition between roles in the esports industry, as long as one is willing and able to work hard. Those who can be successful players can also be successful esports staff. 🙂

Q: How do you compare Chinese esports skill level with foreign?
Efeng: Chinese esports is very strong!

Q: For esports to sucessfully become an Olympic event, what do you think is the biggest bottlenet? What are primary cash flows for various parts of the club? Thank you.
Efeng: I think the biggest bottleneck is popular support and recognition… As for funding for, players have their salary, bonuses, sponsorship and events, the club has sponsors and sales, and staff have their salaries.

 

 

Chinese Esports National Team incoming? …and related public debate regarding the status of esports in China [article]

Last week, an announcement from the national sporting agency instigated a wave of debate. The announcement suggested that they were looking into establishing a national esports team of 17 members, the purpose being to go participate in the upcoming 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

“Electronic sports” can be counted as a sport too? This was the topic of dispute, and it spread rapidly throughout the internet.

On the 22nd, one He Chao, the younger brother of national and international diving champion He Chong, posted on his weibo: “Electronic sports counts as a real sport??? Just playing a game is enough to win Olympic gold, if this were the case then all our real training and hard work is for nothing, might as well go and play games all day……” This ripple, by the power of the internet, magnified into waves of controversy, as things quickly exploded into a war of words online.

Yesterday, our reporter interviewed long-standing participants in the esports realm, and gained a deep understanding of the living conditions of an esports player — this is an environment which, on the outside, looks like a casual, entertaining way of life, yet in reality it is a stringent, grinding, often dull profession; it is something that has been misunderstood by society from the get-go.

A 30 minute game requires no less than 7200 keystrokes

Just last night, the He Chao who had provoked the proverbial hornets’ nest in the way he addressed this topic, deleted the offending post and in its place put up a serious and sincere apology to all those in esports. Yet this act did not serve to calm the already disturbed waves of dispute revolving esports, this new and rising sport. The discussion remained divided between two camps, and the debate continued as to whether esports was simply “playing a game” or not.

In actuality, it could be very simple to determine the real truth and solve the dispute. In order to better understand the problem at hand, we must first clearly understand what really encompasses ‘esports’, and what, exactly, the difference is between ‘esports’ and the much-loved and mainstream accepted ‘online gaming’?

Way back in November of 2003, esports had already been included as the 99th entry in a list of sports as determined by the national sporting agency, and on their official website, it is possible to search and find many pages on the topic of esports. There are real facts and figures to support the fact that esports has requirements of brainpower and stamina alike, and these demands are comparable to other competitive sports. For example, WCG 2006 Warcraft 3 Champion, Sky, had an APM over 200 on average, which is to say, he clicks the mouse and hits the keyboard 200 times per minute. According to calculations, over a 30 minute game this amounts to over 7200 keystrokes, with an added 6000 mouse clicks, far outstripping the intensity with which an average computer user might operate. The concept of ‘sport’ is precisely displayed in this form of high intensity, quick tempo activity — and this is without taking into account the high pressure mental environment in such a competition.

It can be said that, over the years, esports competitors have existed in an environment of extreme misunderstanding of what they do.  As computer usage has gradually become an integral part of people’s lives, as people have accepted and grown accustomed to mice and keyboards, the misunderstanding grew. Average people view these things as a normal part of life, and so the connection between a mouse and a keyboard and ‘sport’ has never been made, instead they assume that these things are the same things that they use in work, or play, and so there must not be much difference in what esports competitors do and what they are familiar with.

An online survey found that 70% of respondents accepted esports as a sport

Therefore, many of those in esports feel ‘alone’. Current marketing director of SCNTV gaming media company, Cui Fangzhou, is a veteran of the earliest crop of Chinese esports competitors, having once been part of a national team training camp in 2007. Today, even though esports has been an officially recognized sport for nearly a decade, and officially support for four years, yet mainstream attention and understanding of it is still miniscule. Cui Fangzhou says, even though in terms of mainstream penetration and acceptance, casual online gaming has more reach than many traditional sports, the concept of ‘esports’ is still mired in the idea that it is an ‘improper profession’.

Yet, Cui Fangzhou believes that, from an objective point of view, esports shares many similarities with traditional sports. From talent scouting, to intense training, and everything in between, esports shares the same type of hard work and sacrifice required for success in traditional sports.

Cui Fangzhou gave our reporter a very simple exampe to illustrate his point: For example in the game Angry Birds, average players might only play to pass each stage — once a stage is past, it’s past. Perhaps the average player passed it due to sheer luck, or an accident, but a professional player would not have this attitude, and would seek to be able to reliably reproduce the result on demand. Thus it can be said that a competitive gamer would focus on the smallest of details, the slightest of angles or power level in an Angry Birds stage, and even spend hours or days on figuring out the equivalent details in an esports title. The end goal, of course, being that if the player were to meet this same situation again in the future, he or she could guarantee that they would know how to handle it right away.

Such is the difference between playing for fun and playing as a profession. Even so, many people remain in the attitudes of “esports is no more than just a squeeze of a mouse, some taps on a keyboard”, and even more parents, because of an inherent lack of understanding for these things, decide that this is a path with no future for their children. Cui Fangzhou, on the other hand, believes that the current industry and market for esports has reached a relatively mature degree. He reveals to us that just last year in the Dota 2 game, six teams from China competed for a prize of 1 million dollars, with one of the teams succeeding in winning it. Additionally, first team players for most teams maintain a monthly salary of around 10,000 RMB, with living and eating expenses covered.

From Cui Fangzhou’s point of view, there’s a reason each and every competition sport exists. He told us he’d also seen He Chao’s post online, but he brushed it off: the roots of misunderstanding in esports are deep, and not something that can be reversed overnight. As someone who’s been through it all, he said, his hope is that society as a whole will become more accepting of esports over time. As with competitions in ‘normal’ sports, every competition in esports has sacrificed, given sweat and tears, and worked hard — on this, they do not lose out to anyone.

Worth a mention at the end is, perhaps their passion in esports has influenced another batch of bystanders. As of this writing, popular sentiment within the debate itself has shifted in favor of esports, and on a major domestic web portal, a survey showed that over 70% of respondents supported the notion of esports as a true sport. This, it seems, would be a good start for people like Cui Fangzhou.

 

“G-League through my eyes” — a post-finals writeup by 17173’s Felix

Foreword:

In this writeup, I’ll only talk about the actual competition at the finals, those that are here for gossip can turn away now.

A few days ago I was able to visit the Mercedes-Benz Center as a representative of a media organization. In name, I was there to report but in reality, I learned and saw more than anything. From the newsroom, to the various nooks and crannies of the venue, to the outer stands, backstage and player/team rest areas, media areas, I saw it all. More importantly, I was put up in 4 and a half star level accommodations, and with it came foreign waitstaff for breakfast, direct rides to and from the venue, and unlimited fruit and salad in the media room. So, okay, I guess you could consider my words below to be ‘soft’ for a reason, but I swear that all of it is the truth.

This is my response to that trending “7 best” piece written by a fan about G-League earlier this week (Dotaland note: this is referring to a satire piece written by a fan that criticized everything at the G-League — will summarize the criticisms in italics for each point)

Ticket pricing

First let’s talk ticket pricing. 100 RMB to go watch G-League, worth it or not? The fan piece compared G-League with StarsWar, WCG, and while this is certainly a legitimate angle from which to look at things, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to look at it. First off, the venue for G-League is none other than the Mercedes-Benz Center. To be able to attend an event at a world-class facility such as this one, no matter if the event is a concert, or a sporting match, or a performance, 100 RMB is the absolute bottom line, or close to it. Secondly, the total investment towards G-League has topped 1 million RMB, and unlike other competitions, G-League does not have Grandpa Samsung, or Papa Tencent — ticket sales are a precious income stream. Third, live attendance at G-League was around 70%, so the argument that the tickets had been incorrectly priced seems to lose its strength based on that figure alone. Ticket pricing is one of those things where each person has their own limit, so let’s just recognize that and move on.

Service (no service at all, bad food, extortion pricing, long lines, everyone went hungry, made worse by the fact that spectators were not allowed to come back in if they went out to get food, and were not allowed to bring food in on their own in the first place)

The fan piece sarcastically pointed out the lack of food and refreshments, this is something that I also felt similarly on. I experienced a 15 RMB combo, which consisted of a piece of pure bread, and a cup of heavily watered down cola, what a rip off. For me, luckily I got to eat and drink as I pleased in the media room in back. Clever fans in the stands would have all snuck their own food in, but those that were too honest would only leave the night feeling famished. On this problem, even if Gamefy wanted to do soemthing, they’d face difficulties. For one, a venue like this wouldn’t ever allow events to freely hand out food and drink and thus affect the venue’s own food and drink business, and for another, it’s not as if Gamefy has the resources and manpower to feed some ten thousand spectators. If you think about it, this kind of thing is pretty common at all events of this size, and the real issue that caused this to be magnified was the fact that the finals competition took too much time, and I’ll address this next.

Competition schedule (long, tedious scheduling from 9am to past 10pm)

Four best-of-5s in a single day has never happened before, as the fan piece claims? In actuality, it happened at TI2. At TI2, for three days straight it was competition from 10 in the morning to 11 at night, for a total of 8 best-of-3s, 14 best-of-1s, and 1 best-of-5. All in all I counted 40 matches, averaging out to 13 matches a day. G-League was four best-of-5s, for a total of 16 matches, and in addition, I’m sure we all realize the difference in time required for an average match in SC2 or Warcraft3, compared with Dota2. So, like this, if the fan piece suggests that those who went to G-League should win an iron-man award, they should only get second place, as the fans in America for TI2 deserve first place. The scheduling was one of TI2’s few weaknesses, and we hear that this next time Valve will make improvements on it. In the same vein, BBKing has promised on weibo that G-League will compress their scheduling in the future as well.

Commentators (poor sound quality, poor hype and excitement, shallow)

This one I mostly agree with the fan piece. The sound quality in the venue had some problems, in some positions (such as where I was sitting), things were hard to hear because of echoing (I paid attention in middle school physics, ha). In most other places it was alright. Another issue was that at certain times, the commentators would be drowned out by the live crowd. Apart from raising the audio level, the commentary was also lacking in excitement and hype compared to Western and Korean counterparts, this has been a long-standing problem in Chinese commentators. As someone who has occasionally made cameos as a commentator, however, I understand that without 100% commitment and talent, it’s very difficult to do, so I won’t say more.

Interaction (weak, forced, lack of interaction and viewing of actual players and teams)

First of all, compared to WCG, the lack of interaction and close-ups with teams and players is something that comes down more to the venue itself. If you’re attending an NBA match, unless you’re at the players’ tunnel or you have courtside seating, you’d also lack any chance to get to see players up close. This is the same with G-League; with the situation at G-League, it would’ve been quite a disaster to attempt to allow ten thousand fans to go up and approach players for autographs. Here I want to make a small suggestion, perhaps we can arrange in the future a day before or after the event itself for player-fan interaction — for example a signing session, to allow room for interaction between players and fans? This could be something to consider in the future.

VIPs (live audience didn’t appreciate the singers, awkward)

It must be noted, our VIP performers were really very gracious. Their final performance was delayed by an hour, yet they still came out and performed all their songs very professionally. Maybe it was because I was in the lower stage and closer to the performance, but it seemed to be pretty good atmosphere down there. I could see outer stage spectators having trouble getting into it though. It has to be said though, Gamefy displayed some bold vision in combining big name performers with a finals event like they did. Additionally, the choices were fitting and suitable, and their styles seemed to match the kind of mentality that ‘esports’ displays — one of independence and chasing one’s own dreams, and the two worked together excellently. Overall, this try at a new thing was quite successful, and other competitions could learn from this.

Promotion (unrealistic, false advertising, exaggerated)

Not much to say about this one — the claim of “ten thousand” wasn’t off at all, no exaggeration there. My own estimate is that at the peak, attendance was around 15000, of course this might not be accurate. But those fans that I spoke with at the event all felt that it was over ten thousand. Considering max capacity of the venue was 18000, and the report was that it awas 70% attendance, these numbers all line up. As for forum fans claiming that only a few hundred people showed up: the inner stage alone held over a thousand people. I believe that the other at least 9000 people weren’t all planted there by Gamefy, nor were they holographic premonitions.

Conclusion

In the past I’d written pieces criticizing ACE League. Even though it wasn’t directed at the organizers, GTV, thinking back on it now I realize that that wasn’t the nicest of things to do, so here I extend an apology to those affected. The other thing was Gamefy’s daily show criticizing WCG. Nonetheless, no matter if it’s ACE or WCG, or G-League, everyone is working hard to advance esports in China, so let’s think from each other’s points of view.

If I were to give G-League a score out of ten, from a competition organizer’s perspective, I give it a full 10. The reason being, for an event like this, execution is much harder than it seems on paper. G-League not only brought to reality an unprecedented level of production, they also went beyond and managed things I had never even thought of before. There’s a slang saying that “if your steps are too big then you risk failure”, and G-League’s accomplishments here have been amazing, so I hope we can all give them more time with the weaknesses.

I don’t know if you all have this feeling, the one where you’re full of hope and energy and ready to chase your dreams, only to find that those around you have succeeded in doing so first. When I stepped into the Mercedes-Benz Center and looked up to see everything on the giant LED screens in the air, that was the feeling I had. It was joyous, envy, and a sense of loss. Competition organizers don’t need consolation, nor do they need sympathy, but they cannot lack the support of fans. Players and fans are our true deities, our god.
